Famous Churches - La Catedral de San Cristóbal, Old Havana, Cuba

Plaza de la Catedral de San Cristobal de La Habana Cuba
It was the Spanish who founded Havana (Habana). The old parts of the city is listed on UNESCOs World Heritage List. Constructed in 1528, La Catedral de San Cristóbal is located on the north side of the central square and opens onto the adjoining plaza. The cathedral was begun in 1528 but wasn't finally completed till 1815 because of several natural disasters. Fresh  earthquakes struck in 1816 and 1847, causing considerable damage, but it was restored again in 1920-22.The facade is gorgeous, its bright-yellow ocher contrasting with the 17th-century white mortared niches and geometric designs painted white, rust, and black that are reminiscent of the Mudejar style. Cathedral de San Cristóbal is one of the finest examples of a baroque facade that was designed with asymmetrical features in Cuba.
Interior - Plaza de la Catedral de San Cristobal de La Habana Cuba
The gold-leaf interior has five gilded altarpieces featuring 18th-century paintings by Miguel Cabrera. Cathedral de San Cristóbal main highlight is its unique style, which is due to the rustic materials that were used during construction. Cathedral de San Cristóbal is Old Havana's traditional cathedral that almost went to ruins. The 19th century neoclassical makeover resulted in the vaulted ceilings, massive stone pillars, and modest collection of art and antiquities.
