City Harvest Church(CHC) in Jurong West, Singapore |
In 1989, Kong felt the
call of God to enter into full-time
Christian service.
Kong had, by then, graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the
National University of Singapore and was working for a publishing house. Having held several small, but successful, evangelistic campaigns in
Singapore, Malaysia and the
Philippines, Kong wanted to become an
itinerant evangelist to assist the churches in
Southeast Asia. In April that year, he left
the Anglican Church he was attending since he was a child and set out to become a staff evangelist with "
Christ for Asia," a Singapore-based mission’s organization. In 2001, CHC built a 2,300-seater, titanium-clad church complex in Jurong West Street 91 for S$48,000,000. Apart from that, it has offices and schools in three different locations.
City Harvest Church (CHC) has 47 affiliate "Harvest" churches in 2010.
City Harvest Church (CHC)
has direct supervision over 29 of them, while 18 come under the
oversight of Harvest School of Ministry led by Rev. George Ong. Mission
statement of
City Harvest Church is “To build a church with a strong spiritual atmosphere of
faith and
purity, where every member is released into ministry, disciple in the
Great Commandment to obey the
Great Commission and the
Cultural Mandate”.
The Church officially bases its values on
Charismatic and
Pentecostal
teachings, with emphases on such "doctrines" as "the Great
Commandment", "the Great Commission" and "the Cultural Mandate". The
primary church building is located at
Jurong West Street 91, and was completed in 2002. Its construction was part of a trend of larger churches in
Singapore
to go for "clean lines, stainless steel, titanium facades" for their
architecture in place of "stained glass and steeples" in an effort
modernize their religious services. The building occupies almost
38,000 sq ft (3,500 m
2) on a 30-year leasehold land and its
main hall seats up to 2,300 attendees and has two 250-seat halls. Since
19 March 2011, CHC has moved to the
Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
